LOOP 2024

For this new edition of LOOP 2024, Galerie Eric Mouchet is very pleased to collaborate for the first time with artist Jérémie Danon (1994, Paris). He graduated from the Beaux-arts de Paris in 2023, and is currently a student at Le Fresnoy. Through hybrid forms that combine fiction and documentary, the artist thinks its projects as opportunities for extraordinary protagonists of the ordinary to speak and be seen. Thanks to their strong narrative potential, they help him question reality.

For this first collaboration, we have chosen to present his new film NAOMI, which follows the journey of a young student raised in an atheist family by a Senegalese mother and a French father, who later convert to Islam out of love. “Naomi” is her middle name, and the one given to women who convert to Judaism. Naomi doesn’t believe in God, and doesn’t think this should stop her from doing what she’s doing today, although she feels alone in her endeavors. The story alternates between moments of worship and more intimate discussions in the studio, in which real-life elements linked to the practice of the Jewish religion are reproduced. “To be Jewish is to know how to tell stories, and I think that sharing this story helps me to articulate mine better, that making this film with you can only strengthen me in my journey to become a better Jew.” Naomi

The artist’s video installation RIDE is currently on view as part of the 17th Lyon Biennale (until January 5, 2025). The video explores the representation of black bodies in the French cultural and media landscape. Teaming up with Kiddy Smile for this video, the two artists bring together personalities from a variety of backgrounds in cars to share their common reflections and personal experiences.
